Can devout Christians be anthropologists, Astronomers or astrophysicists?

Filed in Category Christian Astronomers

I read arguments from Christians about evolution or creationism that defies logic and ignores what has already been proved about the formation of the earth and it’s contents. They stop abruptly at ‘God created the earth and the bible said so’. So I started thinking Christians can never be true scientists because they will never pursue where facts lead them. Hence, can they be anthropologists, Astronomers or astrophysicists

Of course they can, it depends on how they interpret their scriptures. Just look at Ken Miller.

So long as you realize the Bible is not a textbook and just a set of stories to explain things to ignorant goat herders 2000 years ago, then you can accept both Christianity and reality.

It’s not just evolution that refutes a dogmatic, literalist interpretation of the Bible. Biblical Literalist Creation is proved false by geology, cosmology, astronomy, paleontology, Earth sciences, chemistry and physics to name a few.

The secret is to NOT be a dogmatic Biblical Literalist. The secret is to treat the truths of the natural world – the glorious complexities, mysteries, facts, realities – all as your god’s creation.

Evolution is an amazing system that yields beauty, diversity, complexity, resilience, and rebirth. It has allowed life on Earth to weather massive, devastating extinctions. How horrible is it that some creationists deny evolution, or attribute it to Satan, when they should embrace it as their god’s greatest creation?

It is truly evil when people like Kent Hovind, Ken Ham, and many people on Y!A lie to you and tell you that you must deny the reality of evolution to be a Christian. They are creating a conflict where none need exist. They are setting up a “false dichotomy” that makes so many Christians choose a path of ignorance and denial of science. It’s terrible, it erodes our country’s dominance in science, and it makes people close their minds to some of the most fascinating aspects of our world and our origins. After all, if you are a Christian, you cannot possibly deny that your god put those amazing fossils in the ground. Yet because of these “either-or” creationists, many Christians actively close their eyes and minds to the fossil record and DNA. That’s so sad.

“In some respects, science has far surpassed religion in delivering awe. How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, “This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed!”? Instead they say, “No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.”
    – Carl Sagan

If people wish to understand how to accept the fact of evolution while retaining their faith, I think Ken Miller is a good example to follow:

A really interesting fellow is Robert Bakker, who helped shape our understanding of how strong, fast (and probably warm-blooded) many dinosaurs were. He’s also a Pentecostal preacher!

Fortunately, you don’t have to surrender faith to accept evolution. Here are 12,000 enlightened Christian clergy who accept evolution as a foundational truth of our origins:

There is no reason why not, you’ll just come to a different conclusion about the evidence. Most scientists are just about evidence gathering, so it doesn’t much matter what conclusions an individual comes to about the evidence as the whole community usually works towards a correct interpretation. It would be a sad and unfruitful day if the scientific community was formed by people with a monolithic view.

Saying that, most christian scientists seem to regard the bible as allegorical, a moral guide and teaching tool rather than the literal truth. And to be honest all of the supposed scientists of the creationist camp have never produced a single valid and peer reviewed paper.

They already are so your question is moot.
Also, you don’t seem to understand that much of what has been hypothesized regarding the formation of the earth and life is just that: HYPOTHESIS. I can be no more. Your faith is very strong. Just in the educated guesses of others.
